When “Hump Day” Feels More Like a Mountain

I love Wednesdays because we get to minister to some amazing teens, but Wednesdays are called “hump day” for a reason: You have to make it past Wednesday to be on the way to the weekend. And sometimes Wednesdays (or other days) can be overwhelming and feel like an uphill climb that you’ll never get past. The weekend is getting closer but still a ways away. Maybe it seems like for everything you get done, two more things pop up or that for every step you take forward you get knocked three steps backward. Whatever this “hump day” brings your way, the Bible has some great encouragement from the life of David.

David faced some real “uphill climbs” on his way to becoming king of Israel. 1 Samuel 30 records the time when David and his followers were devastated after their homes had been attacked, robbed, and burned and their families taken captive. Things no doubt felt hopeless, but I love how 1 Samuel 30:6 shares both the desperation of the situation and also the hope David found: “And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David encouraged himself in the LORD his God.”

David still had the “mountain” of circumstances to climb over, but he knew he wouldn’t climb it alone. He got busy WITH GOD, encouraged that he could make it because God was with him. David and the other men rescued their families and their stuff. God brought them over the “hump” of bad circumstances, and David got to enjoy some great encouragement on the way because he looked to God.

We often want God to remove the mountains and take away our struggles, but He often has a bigger, better plan. If we’ll encourage ourselves in the Lord, we can make it through a difficult “hump day” and anything else that life throws at us.
