Summer Fun or Danger Zone?

The pool is open! I told Jen last night that I think we’ve already gotten our money’s worth out of it with as much as the girls have been in Friday and Saturday! They are becoming better swimmers, but we still work hard to teach them water safety and are glad that the pool is not very deep. We enjoy endless hours of summer fun and a great opportunity to cool off but also realize it can be a source of danger if we all aren’t careful.

Our words can also be a source of great fun and encouragement or a source of danger. Ephesians 4:29 tells us to “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.” Edifying means building up. Are people better off after they hear us say something? Are we encouraging them to do right and keep going or tearing them down to make ourselves feel a little better?

In the immortal words of my mom and moms everywhere, “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.” Good advice, and maybe we could take it a step further by also adding “If you can’t say something nice, quickly find something edifying you can say.” If silence is golden, uplifting words must be made of diamonds!

As the weather turns warmer (HOTTER lately!), I hope you have a lot of safe summer fun, and I also hope your words and mine will be a source of fun encouragement as well.
