I started the school day with the girls this morning, and while I was puttering around in the kitchen, I heard Brooklyn singing. We’ve talked about obeying her video teacher, and I thought she was sitting while her class was standing up to sing. I quickly looked, expecting to catch her disobeying but instead I “caught her” standing and doing exactly what she was supposed to!
Getting caught can be scary…if we’re doing wrong. We immediately check our speed as we pass a state trooper and maybe hurry to get busy if the teacher or boss walks by. But if we’re doing what we’re supposed to, getting caught becomes a great thing!
In Psalms 139, David is encouraged that God always sees us and knows everything about us, even before we were born (Not the main point of today’s devotion, but Psalm 139:13-16 makes it clear that God knew David while he was in his mother’s womb—interesting perspective on the pro-life/abortion issue!). God sees everything, and verse 1-2 say, “O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me. 2 Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off.” While that might sound intimidating if you have something to hide, David saw it as a great thing. Verses 17-18 say, “How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them! 18 If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand.”
David ends the Psalm by inviting God to take a close look at his life and show him anything he needs to change. Verses 23-24 say, “Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: 24 And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” If we’re doing our best to live God’s way, we can look forward to “getting caught.”
