It’s In Our Nature

Some things are part of human nature. That phrase seems to remind us of bad things like selfishness, envy, and anger, but it also includes things like feeling sad when we see a hurt puppy or images of starving children…it’s just “in our nature” to care!

Other things are part of the nature of a dog (at least ours) and a killdeer bird. Our dog LOVES to chase birds (even while wearing a ducttaped cone of shame!), and a killdeer naturally, instinctively acts wounded and flees the nest to lead potential predators away. Sometimes the fleeing and chasing will go on for a while even though Bella would never hurt the eggs or baby birds! It’s just in their nature.

One other thing that’s in our nature as people is to worship. On our own, we will often worship the wrong things, but on the first “Palm Sunday,” people got it right!

Luke 19:36-40 shows their amazing worship as Jesus rode into Jerusalem: “And as he went, they spread their clothes in the way. 37 And when he was come nigh, even now at the descent of the mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen; 38 Saying, Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest. 39 And some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said unto him, Master, rebuke thy disciples. 40 And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out.”

Their natural desire to worship landed in the right place this time as they exalted their Creator Who came to be their Savior. These same people would shout for Jesus to be crucified by the end of the week, but I love this moment when they got it right.

We all worship something or someone with our lives; how we live shows who or what we think is most important, most worthy of our attention, effort, and adoration.

It’s in our nature to worship. Where’s your worship aimed?
