Encouragement for a Broken Heart

I know I usually use fun, upbeat, even silly pictures for these devotion posts, but that just didn’t seem right today. The best picture idea I could come up with was a simple illustration of how God’s Word seems to “jump off the page” when we need it most.

I just attended the funeral for a sweet 10 year old girl whose loss has so many  grieving and confused. I know of another family that is finally going to be able to lay their son to rest with the military honors he deserves and another family remembering their son on what would have been his 30th birthday. We’ve probably all lost loved ones; there’s a lot of hurt, a lot of pain, and a lot of heartbreak. While no Bible verse can ever take the pain completely away, God’s Word can encourage us and remind us that God is with us no matter what.

Isaiah 40:29-31 says this about God: “He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. 30 Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: 31 But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”

It’s ok to feel faint. It’s ok to be discouraged. It’s ok to wonder why. Sometimes it’s when we are brokenhearted that we realize just how much we need God. Let’s draw closer to the One Who can keep us going.

God doesn’t always give us an explanation, but He always offers us strength. He doesn’t always tell us why, but He’s always willing to walk through the valley with us.

Tragedy always brings a choice to turn toward God or alway from Him. May we all draw closer to the One Who wants to walk through all of life with us.
