Uh oh!

Deuteronomy‬ ‭25‬:‭13‬-‭15‬ ‭says, “Thou shalt not have in thy bag divers weights, a great and a small. Thou shalt not have in thine house divers measures, a great and a small. But thou shalt have a perfect and just weight, a perfect and just measure shalt thou have: that thy days may be lengthened in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.”

Context really does matter! We are not to have weights or measures that can rip people off. It was a common practice to have weights and balances and measures that were incorrect and favored the seller against the buyer. That’s dishonest and theft and obviously wrong.

Gives us an opportunity to look at what the Bible is actually saying even beyond the surface.

It also gives us an opportunity to realize that we need to be honest and fair, even gracious and kind, not looking to the strict letter of the law and trying to find a loophole or a way out.

Let’s see God’s heart for people, for truth and justice. And let’s imitate that heart.

Today’s Bible reading is Deuteronomy 25.
