Why did God create us?
I’m reminded of God‘s power when I see nature displays like this, but this is just the interaction of God‘s creation (weather, sunlight…). Yes it’s His power, but when He really steps into a situation, it’s even more amazing.
God is all-powerful and all-knowing. He needs nothing, and He lacks nothing. So why’d He create us?
Because He wanted to!
Revelation 4:11 says, “Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.”
He doesn’t need us, but He sure does love us and wants a relationship with us.
In Job 22, Eliphaz seems confused about that. Verses 2-3 say, “Can a man be profitable unto God, As he that is wise may be profitable unto himself? Is it any pleasure to the Almighty, that thou art righteous? Or is it gain to him, that thou makest thy ways perfect?”
He seems to mock the idea that God wants a relationship with us and then goes on to mention the immediate rewards he believed we’d get if we properly follow God: “Then shalt thou lay up gold as dust, And the gold of Ophir as the stones of the brooks. Yea, the Almighty shall be thy defence, And thou shalt have plenty of silver. For then shalt thou have thy delight in the Almighty, And shalt lift up thy face unto God.” (Job 22:24-26)
But it was God’s purpose that allowed Job to lose his riches. Clearly our lives are about more than temporary rewards: They’re about relationship with God.
Today’s Bible reading is Job 22.
