Deep thought: You can’t hit the button in an elevator for where you already are
Maybe that isn’t all that deep (definitely not!), but it does illustrate something important:
No matter where we are, we can decide whether we go up or down. And at rock bottom, the only way we can go is up.
It’s normal to get down, and through God it’s possible to not stay down.
Job 3:20-21 says, “Wherefore is light given to him that is in misery, And life unto the bitter in soul; Which long for death, but it cometh not; And dig for it more than for hid treasures;”
Job is obviously really far down at this point, and outward difficulty pretty much guarantees there are inward struggles.
Verse 24 says, “For my sighing cometh before I eat, And my roarings are poured out like the waters.”
We all get discouraged. Hopefully we haven’t all felt this level of hopelessness and despair, but we all look down sometimes.
God did not cause Job’s tragedies or suffering, but God was working even this together for good.
Throughout the book of Job, we’ll see Job’s deep discouragement and hopelessness. But we know the end of his story. Part of the challenge for us is to remember that there’s always hope with God even when we can’t see it yet.
Today’s Bible reading is Job 3.
