The great equalizer
That phrase often refers to death, but some things like this little simple science experiment are also good equalizers in their own way. Fill a straw, put into two different cups, one full and one empty, and before long they even out.
“The great equalizer” can also accurately describe Jesus’ love: It’s the same for everybody.
Philemon 1:15-16 says, For perhaps he therefore departed for a season, that thou shouldest receive him for ever; 16 Not now as a servant, but above a servant, a brother beloved, specially to me, but how much more unto thee, both in the flesh, and in the Lord?”
Jesus’ love is the same for everybody. The book of Philemon and other Scripture passages recognize the personhood of everyone, even of a slave like Philemon. That was unheard of in those days but oh so important.
Jesus loves everyone just the same. That’s why he desires everyone to be saved.
Luke 13:1-3 says, “There were present at that season some that told him of the Galilæans, whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. And Jesus answering said unto them, Suppose ye that these Galilæans were sinners above all the Galilæans, because they suffered such things? I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.”
All people are created equal, equally loved by God, and equally in need of a Savior. If we can live out those basic truths, we’ll be off to a good start toward improving our culture in many ways and, more importantly, pleasing our Savior.
