Surrounded but not blending in
I got to go to the Nebraska Maryland football game today with my Dad, my brother, my nephew, and my uncle. Both teams wear red, but all my college football stuff is Gators colors. So I left it at home. I didn’t exactly blend in!
It’s ok if we blend in with football fans (maybe!), but we have a higher purpose and a higher perspective that should stop us from blending in with the world around us.
1 Timothy 6:1-2 says, “Let as many servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honour, that the name of God and his doctrine be not blasphemed. And they that have believing masters, let them not despise them, because they are brethren; but rather do them service, because they are faithful and beloved, partakers of the benefit. These things teach and exhort.”
In context, this was not endorsing slavery but challenging servants to live with a higher purpose right there in the imperfect (even wicked) cultural context they found themselves in.
Culture is different today…and the same in so many ways. There are times to fight against the culture, but it’s always time to rise above culture and make an eternal impact on our culture.
