Matthew 20:9-13 is part of a parable Jesus told: “And when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny. But when the first came, they supposed that they should have received more; and they likewise received every man a penny. And when they had received it, they murmured against the goodman of the house, saying, These last have wrought but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us, which have borne the burden and heat of the day. But he answered one of them, and said, Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst not thou agree with me for a penny?”
They all received the same pay no matter how long they worked. But it was all just and proper, and it was all according to the boss’s plan.
As one commentator puts it, “God is sovereign. He can do as He pleases. And what He pleases will always be right, just, and fair.”
The eternal reward of a home in heaven will be given to all who place their faith in Jesus as Savior. All other rewards given to Christians for serving Jesus will be perfectly just because they will be decided by Jesus.
The “labels” for us would maybe be different before coming to Christ: Maybe liar, thief, covetous, lustful, bitter, angry without cause…
But the forgiveness and eternal relationship with Jesus is available to all. Any additional rewards and blessing He gives us as we live for our Savior are just icing on the cake!
