It was the end of a long, hot day so maybe my mistake makes sense, but the rake just wouldn’t work as well when it was turned backward! What’s amazing is that the same idea happens when we come to God. If we come to Him out of nothing but duty, expecting to check things off some list, that’s the best we’ll get. But if we come expecting to see Him work in our lives in a real, noticeable way, if we come with our rake pointed the right way, the results will be different.
Psalms 130:5 says, “I wait for the LORD, my soul doth wait, and in his word do I hope.” A friend of mine often ends his prayers by saying, “in Jesus’ name, expecting answers, Amen.” He prays with his rake turned the right way. I hope we’ll all come to prayer, Bible reading, church, and especially our relationship with God expecting to see Him work. It might not always be in the exact way we wanted, but it’ll always be in the best way.
