We had a great time at the National Zoo in Washington D.C. One thing you can know for sure if you see a gator’s eyes above the water: There’s more below the surface. And one thing you can pretty much guarantee if you see someone being rude and angry toward everyone around them: There’s more hurt, pain, and need just under the surface of their life as well. It’s never ok to act like that, but it sure can make a difference for someone to come alongside with some undeserved love and kindness.
In Luke 6:35, Jesus said, “But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.”
It’s been said that “Hurting people hurt people,” and Proverbs 25:21-22
gives us this challenge: “If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink: 22 For thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, and the LORD shall reward thee.”
Let’s give a little extra kindness, a little extra understanding, a little extra grace and mercy because that’s what Jesus does for us AND because we never know what someone else is going through. There just might be a lot more going on under the surface in their lives, and our kindness might be just the thing God uses to help and challenge them.
