We can try, but one or the other won’t happen well (usually I pretty much stop listening as soon as I start talking!). Jen and I try to train the girls to be good listeners, but sometimes it’s definitely me that needs to stop what I’m doing to listen to them. We can’t talk and listen well at the same time, and we can’t rush and listen well at the same time either. Sometimes we just need to slow down and take time to listen. To our family. To our friends. Maybe to a boss. Definitely to God as we read His Word and listen for His leadership, guidance, and encouragement each day.
1 Samuel 3:10 says, “And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for thy servant heareth.” And that was it! No fine print. No loopholes in case Samuel didn’t like what God said. He was willing to hear and obey before he even knew what God had to say. Once Samuel knew it was God talking (and not Eli), he was ready to listen and obey whatever God said. You might be thinking “but I’ve never heard God speak out loud to me.” Neither have I! But He speaks to me every single day through His Word. Sadly, I don’t always listen like I should, but God always speaks into my life. If you wanna hear from God, ask Him to speak to you through HIs Word and then open a Bible and start reading. Maybe start with 1 Samuel 3 (the whole chapter is great!). The key to hearing is often the willingness to listen and follow what is said.
