They say silence is golden, but sometimes silence can be the most hopeless sound in the world. As we remember what Jesus did for us and get ready to celebrate Easter, we have Good Friday and then I think it could accurately be called Silent Saturday, the day when everything seemed still, quiet, hopeless. The cross was empty but the grave was not.
Mark 15:47 - 16:1 says, “And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses beheld where he was laid. 1 And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him.” In Mark’s Gospel, in one verse we jump from Friday to Sunday, but a lot of life is lived in those silent Saturdays in between. And there really is a lot of hope for us in those times even if it’s difficult to see it.
Jesus wasn’t defeated on the cross. He defeated sin and death. Even during life’s silent struggling times, we have infinite hope and purpose and
Jesus is at work on our behalf.
“Friday is good ‘cause Sunday is coming” is a great quote (and song lyric) I’ve seen repeated. What an encouraging hope! And the same hope is there on Saturday too. Sometimes it’s easier for us to remember hope during calamity than calm because calamity often brings help and support while calm brings deafening silence. But those are also often the times when the best things are coming (just look what happened that Sunday morning a couple thousand years ago!). So if you find yourself in a “silent Saturday” don’t lose hope. Sunday is coming!
