We had a fun family picnic at McCormick Farm the other day. No, we didn’t play duck, duck, goose, but we did get to feed them! Family times like this are wonderful, but we probably all have times when it feels like our life isn’t accomplishing anything more than a kid running around a circle playing duck, duck, goose.
Thankfully the Bible shows us how to live a life with purpose…and how to avoid things that would hinder that purpose. 2 Samuel 5:12 says, “And David perceived that the LORD had established him king over Israel, and that he had exalted his kingdom for his people Israel's sake.” That verse gives us at least 2 practical ways to stop “running around in circles” and to start making our lives count. First, let God build your life. Let God take you where He wants to. If we get somewhere without God, it won’t be anywhere we should be, no matter how much “success” or popularity it brings.
Second, do the right things for the right reasons. David knew that God was using him “for his people Israel's sake.” If we always do stuff just for ourselves, we’ll always be going the wrong way, even if we’re doing some good things along the way. It’s a great thing if people look at our lives and can easily tell that God built them.
The next time we feel like we’re just running around in circles going nowhere, let’s stop and make sure we’re letting God build our lives one day, one decision at a time.
