Which weighs more: $1 of quarters or $1 of dimes? We couldn’t tell until I took my finger off the scale…and the it was pretty close! The quarters (on the right) seemed to tip the scale a bit, but we did try to make it a fair test (eventually).
Proverbs 11:1 says, “A false balance is abomination to the LORD: but a just weight is his delight.” If you use a rigged scale (or put your finger on one side), you won’t get an accurate reading, and in a Bible-times society, such dishonesty was a way to rob people by charging them more for less stuff. We should never steal, cheat, or be dishonest, and we also need to start the “leveling process” with an honest assessment of ourselves instead of trying to “tip the scales” in our favor and pretend like we don’t all have areas where we need to grow.
Job 31:6 says, “Let me be weighed in an even balance, that God may know mine integrity.” It’s easy to hold other people to a higher standard than we want God to hold us to, but instead we should start by examine our own lives and be eager to grow and improve anywhere God shows up we need to.
Proverbs 21:2 says, “Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the LORD pondereth the hearts.” Are we doing right according to us or according to God?
