In the Bible, Nehemiah dealt with deep sadness. Nehemiah 2:2-4 says, “Wherefore the king said unto me, Why is thy countenance sad, seeing thou art not sick? this is nothing else but sorrow of heart. Then I was very sore afraid, 3 And said unto the king, Let the king live for ever: why should not my countenance be sad, when the city, the place of my fathers' sepulchres, lieth waste, and the gates thereof are consumed with fire? 4 Then the king said unto me, For what dost thou make request? So I prayed to the God of heaven.” Nehemiah was sad about the destruction of Jerusalem, and his burden drove him to do something good. God used him to lead a group back to Jerusalem to rebuild the wall. Sadness could have ruined Nehemiah, but instead his burden drove him to help the situation.
When we’re sad about something, we have some choices to make. We can get bitter or we can get better. We can pout or we can pray. We can get busy complaining or get busy putting our burden into action. When we have a long face, it’s time to take a long look at our amazing God and keep going in the work we get to do for Him.
