I had a wonderful birthday on Saturday (thank you to everyone who wished me a happy birthday), but some days are stressful or difficult for all of us. In those times, do you make smart decisions that help you feel better? Honestly, a lot of time, I’d choose the chips instead of a run (and then eat more of them than I should!). We often have the chance to choose to make things better…or worse…for ourselves and others.
1 Samuel 8:19-20 says, “Nevertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, Nay; but we will have a king over us; 20 That we also may be like all the nations; and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles.” The Israelites faced some challenges (don’t we all!), but instead of turning to God, they asked for a king to solve all of their problems. So many of their kings made things far worse instead of better. Up until this point Israel was a theophany meaning that God was their King and they didn’t need an earthly ruler. Their wrong choices often messed up this perfect system, but we have similar choices throughout each day as we decide whether we will serve God, sin, or selfishness. Let’s all make sure we’re finding solutions that genuinely help.
