Maybe you notice our smiles or how beautiful my wife and daughters are. Maybe you’re really observant and you notice who’s winning the game. Or maybe you wonder why we have a butter dish on the table during a board game (just noticed that myself!). No matter what you noticed first in this picture, what really matters is this: What do you want people to notice first about you?
It can be tempting to dress immodestly to try to get ourselves noticed or post immodest pictures to get a bunch of likes and attention, but that’s the wrong goal. Modesty (wearing appropriate clothing…) is usually a topic people don’t wanna talk about and DEFINITELY don’t want anyone else to talk to them about. A lot of people have different views, rules, and opinions on what is and isn’t modest, but I think it’s most helpful to start with the right goal.
1 Peter 5:5 talks about being “clothed with humility.” The most important thing about us is not US at all: it’s Jesus living in us. That means we should live to point attention to Him not ourselves. There are a lot of ways to do that (or fail to do it), and what we wear is a great place to start.
1 Peter 3:3-4 is written for a specific context (women trying to see an unsaved husband come to Jesus), but the principle applies to all of us: “Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; 4 But let it be the hidden man of the heart,” We should want people to notice our heart for our Savior first of all. There’s nothing wrong with dressing well or looking nice, but there is something wrong with calling attention to ourselves with tight or revealing clothing. When you pick out an outfit, are you hoping people will notice how in-shape you are and how amazing you look, or does 1 Corinthians 10:31 guide even the outfits you wear (“Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.”)?
