How to Stay Focused Even When Work Gets in the Way

I’m proud of my wife for working out and fighting through a recent foot injury…and distraction from our Aussie puppy! The work of training and taking care of a pup can make it hard to focus on anything else, and in everyday life it’s often hard to give priority to what matters most.

Luke 10:38-42 says, “Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house. 39 And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word. 40 But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me. 41 And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: 42 But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.” Both ladies were doing good things, but Mary was doing the best thing.

It’s been said that “If the devil can’t make us bad, he will try to make us busy.” There’s definitely a place for work, but work should never drive us away from worship. Jesus wasn’t telling Martha to stop working in general but to worship while she worked. Worthwhile work comes when we do what we do in worship to God. And by the way, that “work” can be school classes, going to the office, flipping burgers, sharing our faith, or whatever else God chooses for us to do.

When the work you used to do FOR Jesus has become more important to you THAN Jesus, spend time at Jesus’ feet until you’re ready to keep worshiping while you work for Him.
