So my wife bought this sign for our house the other day, and I was a little insulted…until I realized how true it is! Our family might not always be calm and organized, but we sure do love each other and enjoy spending time together (and even making messes together!) It’s easy to act like we have it all together better than everyone else, but a little (controlled) chaos can be a good thing. But pointing out issues in other people while ignoring our own never helps anyone.
James 3:8-10 says, “But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. 9 Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. 10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.”
It’s much better to be consistent in our speech, to use our words to bless God and people. It’s often easy to come to God recognizing we’re imperfect but then look down on people around us as if we’re better than they are. We can be tempted to judge their sin and ignore our own, harshly nitpicking every issue in their lives while pretending we don’t have our own issues.
Maybe a great way to bless those around us is to affirm the good they are doing and never act like their “chaos” and shortcomings make them less valuable. Let’s try to consistently be a blessing, a help, with our words today.
