“I Will Be Your Guardrails”
Kinda sounds like a song title! It’s actually what I said to Brooklyn on a recent hike. She’s scared of heights sometimes (so am I), and she liked having a guardrail beside her when there was a drop off nearby. This section didn’t have one, but I assured her that she was safe because I was there to keep her safe.
Who or what do you count on to keep you safe? Not just physically safe but emotionally safe, financially safe, etc.? What “guardrail” do you count on most in your daily life? Money doesn’t always last and popularity can fade. Success can change to failure at times, and even friends and family can sadly let us down. But in Psalm 23, David describes how he is ok to go anywhere and through anything as long as God is with him.
Verse 1 says, “The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.” David knew God would meet his needs.
Verses 2-3 say, “He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. 3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.” David trusted God for direction and for times he needed some peace and rest.
Verses 4-5 say, “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. 5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.” David didn’t let circumstances determine his mindset or ruin his day. He knew he could face the worst as long as he was with God.
Verse 6 wraps it up by saying, “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.”
Shepherds can only help those who are willing to follow, and guardrails only keep you safe if you’re trying to stay on the path where you belong. God has all we will ever need. Let’s “stay on the path” and let Him be our guardrail in this crazy thing called life.
