Here’s one way to literally under react! It’s easy to stand that way (as long as this Amazon delivery box is there with that sign!), but it’s not not always easy to live that way when emotions get stirred up. I find myself overreacting and making situations worse too often. Maybe that simple sign can be a reminder to all of us to watch our reactions.
Proverbs 16:32 says, “He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city.” Mighty—How should we measure strength? Maybe it should be more about self control than how much we can bench press, about ruling our spirit instead of how far we can throw a ball or how fast we can run.
Taking a city requires planning, patience, and persistence. There would often be setbacks, but progress and victory were possible. For us, with God’s help we can control our temper and rule our spirit.
Proverbs 17:28 says, “Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.” Sounds kinda harsh at first, but I’m sure all of us have wanted to say or do something really foolish as an overreaction. Instead of overreacting and then trying to clean up after ourselves with constant apologies,
let’s remember that right responses come from the Holy Spirit leading us. Instead of overreacting, let’s take the time to see how God wants us to respond.
