Don’t Live and Die by What’s not Working

Choices matter! I’ve learned I gotta cut back on caffeine if I don’t want to keep getting dehydrated (that’s only a half cup in the pic!), but I actually said “Don’t live and die by what’s not working” on Saturday during the Florida Gators football game after yet another unsuccessful run up the middle! Seriously, I love my team, but they keep the same thing even after being stopped repeatedly! I don’t know how many times I’ve already yelled “Run to the outside!” at the TV this year! Whether you like football or not, it’s a simple yet powerful idea: If what we’re doing isn’t working, we need to be willing to do something better!

Jonah 1:1-3 says, “Now the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, 2 Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me. 3 But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.” Jonah disobeyed God, and God sent a storm to stop him from going the wrong way. Then Jonah famously gets swallowed by “a great fish” after he had to be thrown off the ship he was using to run from God. He did better the next chance he got, but clearly, Jonah’s wrong choices weren’t working out for him!!!

Most of us won’t get chased by a literal storm or swallowed by a fish, but we’ve all suffered the consequences of going our own way instead of obeying God. Proverbs 13:15 says that “the way of transgressors is hard.” In other words, living in sin is a really difficult way to live.

Every problem we face is NOT because of a wrong choice we make, but a lot of them are! Henry Ford said, “If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got.” Albert Einstein put it this way: “Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” Is it time to make a change in your life instead of continuing to “live and die by what’s not working”?
