Why Does 1 Float But Not the Other?

It floats! We had a good time showing that regular Coke sinks in water but Diet Coke floats. We only had Coke Zero not regular Diet Coke, and I didn’t know for sure what would happen with that. Apparently sugar makes Coke sink and any sort of artificial sweetener allows it to float. We also went a step further and tested to see whether Coke Zero would float in a couple inches of regular Coke… and it does! Having the right stuff inside and keeping the wrong stuff out let’s Coke float and will keep us afloat as well.

1 John 2:15 tells us to “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” “The world” here means the culture around us that rejects God and goes it’s own way, trying (and ultimately failing!) to be genuinely happy and fulfilled apart from Him. Sometimes even Jesus-followers will try to do both--love God and love the world, but it simply doesn’t work. Love for God will drive out love for the sinful culture around us, or love for the world will drive out love for God. We should never stop loving the PEOPLE around us, but we should never love sin, no matter how popular or accepted it becomes.

If we added regular Coke to the Coke Zero, it would soon stop floating, and if we allow ungodly influences into our lives, we’ll start to sink as well. We are called to be in the world but not to let the sinful influence of the world into us. We’ve got something so much better already anyway! Let’s stand out and step up instead of blending in.
