We had a great time coloring eggs the other day and noticed something: Coloring the shell doesn’t change the color of the inside! Jennifer and I already knew that of course, but the girls seemed a little nervous about eating pink or blue or orange eggs (maybe some green eggs and ham? 🤔). But they eagerly ate some after we took the shells off and they saw normal egg colors inside.
In Matthew 23, Jesus confronts some religious leaders who focused on the outside only, thinking that would fix their heart issues. Verse 25 says, “Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.” Making the outside look good may convince some people, but to be right with God, we’ve gotta first change the inside. Thankfully, Jesus offers the solution in verse 26: “Cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.” If you’ve never accepted His offer of salvation and had Him make you right on the inside, I’d love to tell you how you can today! As Christians, 1 John 1:9 tells us how we can keep our day-to-day walk with God right inside and out: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” We all need forgiveness sometimes to keep relationships close and right, and Jesus is eager to forgive!
We’ve probably all been around people who thought some Axe body spray would cover up their nasty body odor, but what they really needed was a shower. Spiritually, it’s not about covering heart issues; it’s much better to get completely right through Jesus. Coloring egg shells won’t change the inside, and putting on all the “spiritual body spray” in the world won’t change what God sees in you. The real solution is available.
