Life’s not always easy, and from the death of Jen’s brother to her getting covid and not being able to go to the funeral, we are in a tough time. Addison, Brooklyn, and I have been doing our best to keep separated from Jen, hoping that we won’t all get covid (so far so good!), and it would be easy to just want to give in to discouragement; but in difficult times, I’m often reminded of the saying “the darker the night the brighter the light.” That expression is usually applied to our Christian testimony shining brighter as the world around us gets darker, and that’s definitely true. But it’s also true that encouragement often shines brighter when we are discouraged, if we are willing to notice.
Job 35:10 accurately describes God as the One that “giveth songs in the night.” We have seen God send us some wonderful encouragement, including a beautiful sky last night and the chance to do one of our favorite things: catch fireflies. Instead of giving in to discouragement, we chose to focus on the good that God is sending our way.
You can’t catch fireflies during the day, and sunsets only happen when night is coming. Sometimes we just need to take time to notice the good, to notice the God Who is right there with us, even in the middle of a dark night or a difficult time.
