What’s Weighing You Down?

I love science! Even the simplest materials can demonstrate some amazing things. As you can see, Addison enjoyed this experiment where we emptied a tea bag, straightened it out, and lit the top of it. As the flame burned away the extra weight of the bag, the little bit that was left was able to “fly away” because it was no longer weighed down. We did it three times, and Addison has already said she wants to do it again!

It’s easy for all of us to hold tight to the wrong things and get weighed down in life. God has amazing blessings and an amazing plan for us, but we can miss out on the peace, joy, hope, and FUN He has for us if we don’t allow God to “burn away” things that are weighing us down. Hebrews 12:1 says, “Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us.” Besetting sins (sins that constantly tempt us) will weigh us down, but so will the “weights” of GOOD things that aren’t God’s BEST things.

Verse 2 gives us the secret of how to set aside these weights and sins: “Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.” Jesus was able to face the unimaginable by remembering the joyful reason He had to go to the cross: to pay for your sins and mine. He rose again, and He wants you to enjoy every bit of the amazing life He has for you. Let’s get rid of any “weight” that’s holding us down.
