What Worry Often Looks Like

I’m sure we’ve all had sleepless nights when our minds wouldn’t shut off and worries went from bad to worse, and it seems like the hardest way to fall asleep is to TRY really hard to fall asleep. I admit that I staged these pictures after I got a good night’s sleep last night, but they do show the struggle all of us face from time to time (and no one wants to see me during or after a genuinely sleepless night—it’s not a pretty sight! 😊).

I was awake for a little while last night when Addison woke up upset, but she quickly fell back to sleep once I was in the room with her. She knew I had the situation under control and that she could rest easy. No matter what we’re worried about, God is bigger, knows all about it, and has it under His control. That should let us get some rest. Psalms 127:2 says, “It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep.” We should work hard, but if God is leading our lives, we can also enjoy good times of rest.

Worry isn’t just overnight. Sometimes worry looks like a kitchen table covered with bills or a medical report you’re too afraid to open.  Maybe for you, worry looks like a deadline, a test, an SOL exam, or a difficult family discussion. Those are all great times to remember Who is in control.

God is not bound by time; in fact “one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.” God’s not bound by money but instead owns “the cattle upon a thousand hills” and owns the very hills those cows graze on. God’s not bound by our abilities or strength but instead tells us that we “can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”

For a Christian, worry can become an opportunity to give those things to God and trust the One Who’s got it all under control! Take a nap, eat a snickers, go for a walk, or just simply rest in the fact that our Heavenly Father is watching over us.
