How To Have Peace Even When You’re Surrounded by Chaos

It’s WINDY! The wind whipped hard all around that egg this morning, and it just lay there safe and sound. The entire chicken coop blew off from over top of it, and still that egg was fine. We set the coop back upright, but you can see some damage it (and the fence) took. The chickens are all fine, and we were amazed that the egg doesn’t have a single crack! It stayed safe even in the middle of a storm.

In Mark 4, the disciples went through a big storm while in a boat at sea…and Jesus slept right through it! Mark 4:37-38 says, “And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full. 38 And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish?” The disciples were panicked, thinking the storm was about to overcome them, but Jesus slept peacefully because He knew He had everything under control. The disciples thought they were at the mercy of the storm, that the storm was in control, but Jesus was (and is) in complete control!

Mark 4:39-40 says, “And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. 40 And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful?” Circumstances were out of control, but the disciples could have had peace because Jesus was in complete control. He’s powerful enough to keep us safe right in the middle of the storm.

We can have “peace, be still” even before Jesus calms the storm because He’s with us in the storm. I love the quote from General Stonewall Jackson: “My religious belief teaches me to feel as safe in battle as in bed.” He understood that Jesus is just as able to keep us safe at home as in a battle, and we know that when difficulties do arise, Jesus is right there bringing ultimate good from them.

It's also been said that “Sometimes God calms the storm, but sometimes He lets the storm rage and calms His child.” We can pray for God to calm the storm, but let’s also give God the chance to give us peace, even right in the middle of the storm.

It's windy a lot on the hill where we live! Check out this post from another windy day!
