A Humongous Fungus Among Us

Apparently mushrooms will grow almost anywhere! I’ve heard they’ll even grow in coffee grounds—maybe the girls and I will try that next! Give some shrooms a bit of water, dirt (or coffee!), and a little light, and they’ll grow wherever they’re planted, even in a box.

There’s also a simple “recipe” for us to grow spiritually wherever we find ourselves. Psalm 1:1-3 describes it this way: “Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. 2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. 3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.” Delight in God’s Word, read it, think about it throughout each day (and even when you’re awake at night) and you’ll grow and not shrivel up, even in the heat of difficulty.

But did you notice that Psalm 1 also lists some “growth killers”? Apparently just a few drops of dish soap or vinegar could wipe those mushrooms out. Grow killers need to be kept away from mushrooms, and there are some growth killers we need to keep away from our lives as well. None of us will grow spiritually if we surround ourselves with ungodly influences, even if we think we can “handle it” or that it won’t actually affect us. Growth killers have to go!

Even if some of our circumstances aren’t perfect, we can grow right where we are planted by making sure we fill our lives with the right ingredients.
