Really simple science experiment that you’ve probably seen and even done before: oil and water don’t mix! We tried! We stirred and stirred. They would mix together for a few seconds but then separated quickly as soon as we stopped stirring. Some things are just not meant to go together.
2 Corinthians 6:17 says, “Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord.” The verses before that are a challenge to Christians to not be “unequally yoked together with unbelievers” and to separate from idol worship. God and idols obviously don’t mix, but neither do Godly lifestyles and ungodly lifestyles. If we try to mix the Godly and the ungodly, it never works. We can love everyone, share our faith with everyone, and do our part to get along with everyone, but at the end of the day, some things don’t mix: they separate. Whether it’s ungodly people or your own ungodly behavior, let’s do what’s necessary to separate ourselves from what doesn’t belong in our lives.
You might think it’s really silly that we even tried to stir the oil and water together since they obviously can’t combine, but how often do all of us try to combine God’s way and our own, to serve God and yet “mix in” some selfish sinful desires or wrong influences? It doesn’t work any better than mixing oil and water. Matthew 6:24 says, “No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other.” God’s way doesn’t mix with our way: we should never try to serve God AND something else.
Oil and water separate; they naturally push each other out when they get mixed up together. So if your life is feeling all mixed up, get so close to God that it’s easy for you to push all the wrong out of your life and separate yourself for the AMAZING life God has in mind for you.
