Disappearing Mountains

The mountains disappeared yesterday! Don’t worry: this isn’t another one of those social media eye tests where you have to say which color you see or if you can spot the hidden number; we were just amused that the snow storm blocked out the view of the mountains. Just because we can’t see them, doesn’t mean they aren’t there (deep truth, I know but stick with me because this simple illustration has helped me several times).

Psalms 46:1-2 says, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. 2 Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed,

and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea.” It would have been silly, ridiculous even for us to panic that the mountains had actually disappeared, but these verses reassure us that we don’t have to panic even when something crazy does happen. We often remind the girls that panic doesn’t help anything, but it’s still so easy to panic in fear when WE are out of control or OUR PLAN is thrown out the window. But Psalm 46:1-2 tells us that fear isn’t necessary…because of God, NOT US!

Next time fear or panic start to set in, remind yourself that God is there, and that He loves you. Romans 8:38-39 offers some amazing reassurance: “For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, 39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

If we have a relationship with God through faith in Jesus, we can rise above fear and panic. It’s been said that we should never doubt in the dark what we knew in the light. God is just as real and just as good during the difficult, crazy times as the calm, easy ones.
