Wash Up!

Pastor John worked hard yesterday power washing our new (to us) playground equipment at the church. We were amazed how different the finished product looked, and it reminded us about  the washing Jesus wants to do in our lives.

In John 13, Jesus washed His disciples’ feet and taught about 2 different kinds of washing: permanent and daily. Verses 8-10 say, “Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me. 9 Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head. 10 Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all.”

That playground wood needed some serious deep cleaning. It’ll be years until it’s that dirty again, but if Jesus saves you, your sins are washed away forever. That washing is permanent, and that’s why Peter didn’t need a full washing—his sins were already permanently forgiven and he just needed daily washing. Roads were dirty back then, and feet needed daily cleaning. Like every Christian, Peter sinned sometimes and needed to confess that sin to keep close to Jesus. Peter would have “no part with” Jesus—he wouldn’t enjoy a close relationship with Jesus—without making sin in his life right as often as needed.

Verse 10 mentions that “not all” the disciples were saved. Unfortunately Judas never accepted Jesus as his Savior and still needed permanent washing.

So what about you? Do you need permanent washing by once and for all placing your faith in Jesus? Or maybe as a Christian you need daily washing to make something right between you and your Savior. After being washed, that playground was ready to be put to good use, and I hope none of us will miss out on the amazing things Jesus has planned for our lives and the amazing ways He wants to use us.
