Are You Thirsty?

We learned a few things doing this classic celery experiment: Celery doesn’t always soak up colored water as fast as expected, the red seemed to soak up better than the blue, and the girls apparently don’t want any colored water on them! That celery was dry before we put it in the glasses, and I thought for sure it would “drink up” the water more than it did!

“Thirsty” celery might not always know what’s best for it to soak up, but the Bible makes it clear how we can satisfy our deepest thirst. John 7:37-39 says, “In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. 38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. 39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)”

The people there had just completed a traditional religious ceremony involving water, but Jesus knew they would always be spiritually thirsty unless they accepted Him. Are you thirsty? Is there a longing in your heart and life that you know deep down only Jesus can satisfy? Sadly, many people left thirsty that day, never coming to Jesus, but you still have a chance, a choice to say yes to Jesus’ invitation.

When a person accepts Jesus as Savior, the Holy Ghost (Who is God) comes to live in them forever, empowering them to live the Christian life and impact everyone around them with the only hope that can satisfy their real thirst. So why don’t we as Christians ALWAYS have God’s love flowing out of our lives? Unfortunately, even with the Holy Ghost living in us, we are all tempted to do things our way sometimes instead of letting the Holy Ghost fill us and have control.  We all need to take time with God “filling up,” soaking up God’s Word, praying, and letting Him direct our lives so that we are ready for His love to flow out of us.

So, are you thirsty?
