Disappointment and Hope

Today we went to SeaQuest in Lynchburg. We’d gone back in November, and the girls were so excited to meet the mermaid, but she was out sick. So today they couldn’t wait for another chance…but no mermaid today either. They were disappointed, but as you can see from the pictures, they handled it like champs and had a ton of fun anyway. And an employee even gave them extra tokens to feed lots of animals.

Psalms 42:11 says, “Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.” Disappointments will come, but we can keep going, keep hoping, keep praising God. He never says no without a good reason.

The girls could have let disappointment ruin their day (how many times do so many of us do that!), but I’m grateful that they chose to keep enjoying the good things all around them.

Don’t tell them, but obviously the “mermaid” is a fake anyway. When God says no, He’s got the real deal, His best in mind for us. Let’s keep the attitude shown in verse one of this Psalm: “As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God.” God will never fail us; let’s get closer to Him, even when life’s disappointments get us down.

Some Extra Bible Reading I Try to Do Each Day

Psalm 20:1 The Lord hear thee in the day of trouble; the name of the God of Jacob defend thee; Send thee help from the sanctuary, and strengthen thee out of Zion; Remember all thy offerings, and accept thy burnt sacrifice; Selah. Grant thee according to thine own heart, and fulfil all thy counsel. We will rejoice in thy salvation, and in the name of our God we will set up our banners: the Lord fulfil all thy petitions. Now know I that the Lord saveth his anointed; he will hear him from his holy heaven with the saving strength of his right hand. Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the Lord our God. They are brought down and fallen: but we are risen, and stand upright. Save, Lord: let the king hear us when we call.
