Bury the hatchet…or attack with it???

You‘ve probably heard the old saying “bury the hatchet” meaning to make peace and forgive each other. But I’ve seen some people stay mad for so long that I’ve almost wanted to toss them a hatchet and challenge them to either attack each other or bury that hatchet once and for all. And I took this picture in my Sunday best because that’s often when Satan loves to stir these issues up. Anger, bitterness, and unforgiveness often destroy relationships and lives long before actual violence happens.

Romans 12:17-20 says, “Recompense to no man evil for evil…If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink:” It’s never a good idea to try to do God’s job for Him!

Instead of seeking revenge (even the revenge of never speaking to that person again), we should seek peaceful, good relationships. That doesn’t mean we need to be close with everyone, just that we should want to be on good terms with everyone. After all, how else are we gonna influence them (and others) for Christ?

Maybe the hardest (and most important part): Do good. It’s genuinely amazing how much of a difference a little kindness can make.

When our personal feud against someone matters more to us than God’s mission, it’s time to bury the hatchet and keep going for God.
