Wise as serpents. Harmless as…butterflies???

I was excited to show my wife this cool butterfly the other day. We came around the front of the van. I pointed. She panicked! I guess from that top angle it does kinda look like a snake!

In Matthew 10:16, Jesus said, “Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.” So it’s doves not butterflies, but pretty close! I’ve seen this summarized as being “tough-minded but tenderhearted.” We need to be wise to the attacks of Satan and smart about how we interact with the world around us so that we don’t get tricked or sucked in. But we also need to be harmless. Most people like doves. They’re symbols of peace, often used in weddings, and make a nice, gentle sound. If someone dislikes a dove, it’s often because of other things going on in that person’s life, not because of the dove. If only that could be said of each of us as Christians!
