How rich are you?

My wallet might look loaded, but that $10 is the only cash in it! I have some almost empty Metro cards from our recent D.C. trip and some other junk that needs cleaned out, but honestly, most of us are richer than we think if we have food, clothes, and a roof over our heads. We have a lot to be thankful for. It’s a shame how easy it is to fall into the trap and distraction of money!

In Luke 12, Jesus told a parable about a rich farmer who had a great crop. The farmer chose to build bigger barns and hoard the stuff, acting like the “here and now” is all that there is so he might as well “eat, drink, and be merry.”

Luke 12:20-21 says, “But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided? 21 So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.”

It’s much better to “lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven” as Matthew 6:20 says instead of allowing earthly riches to distract us from pursuing heavenly riches. We should be rich toward God by living in gratitude for all He’s given us and by being generous toward the people God loves (which is everyone!).

How rich are you? Maybe we should ask about how rich we are toward God.
