Are your ducks all in a row?

We’re just happy to have some baby chicks in a row! We probably all have times where the stuff in our lives feels pretty disorganized, like it would take a miracle to somehow get our “ducks in a row.” It’s great to get organized, but Jesus wants to use us even before our “ducks are all in a row.” The key is to say yes to Jesus instead of making excuses for why we can’t.

Luke 9:57-62 tells about 3 guys who were ready to follow Jesus…except for the excuses they let get in the way. One said, “Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest. 58 And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.” Apparently he was unwilling to give up the comforts of home to follow Jesus.

Another guy said, “Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father. 60 Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God.” Sounds kinda harsh at first, but most likely that guy’s dad was alive and well. He was just putting off following Jesus. In fact, he was saying “me first” (it’s right there in his quote!).

Then the other guy said, “Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house.” He said “me first” too! Jesus might’ve been fine with him saying bye to his family once he was willing to put Jesus first.

We need to stop asking, “How does following Jesus fit with the other things in my life?” and instead be willing to put Jesus first. It’s normal and good to be willing to give some stuff up to follow our Savior. After all, He gave up heaven to come to earth for us and then gave up His life to pay for our salvation!
