It’s amazing how deep plant roots go and how hard it can be to pull them up sometimes! Even with plants, we usually see only what’s above the surface, but that’s not all there is or all that matters.
Things that are “below the surface” often make or break our lives.
When Samuel was sure that the tall, strong man in front of him was to be Israel’s next king, “the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:7). God chose David instead of his brothers. Outwardly, David wasn’t the biggest or strongest, but his inward strength and character came out in battle after battle as he became a great king.
Most of the iceberg that tragically sank the Titanic was below the surface, not the 10% that was visible, and most of our successes or failures are won or lost before anyone sees the results. For example, In Matthew 5:27-28, Jesus said, “Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: 28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.”
It’s not just about the outward. In fact what’s below the surface in our lives, good or bad, often matters more. Do you care about what’s below the surface or just what people can notice?
