Sanctuary has been a cry of safety and refuge for many over the years! People have run to churches and even hidden in them seeking shelter from enemies. While they weren’t always able to find physical safety, there’s always spiritual safety available in every Bible-preaching, God-honoring church.
Psalms 73:17 says, “Until I went into the sanctuary of God; then understood I their end.” It seemed like those who rejected God we’re winning…until Asaph got God’s perspective. Spending time with God helps us get the right viewpoint on life’s issues and offers safety from all sorts of wrong ideas. Hopefully we always find that viewpoint in church sanctuaries and services, but we can always find it in the sanctuary of God’s presence as we spend time with Him.
Church can be a breath of fresh air (and hopefully a spiritual stress-reliever). So what about when we have to leave the sanctuary and go back to “reality”? Verse 24 says, “Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory.” Our whole lives can (and should) be spent with God, led by Him, talking with Him, enjoying our relationship with Him no matter what else is going on. Sanctuary goes beyond a building! I hope we will all rest in the sanctuary of God’s presence even when we aren’t in church!
