Walking in a Winter Wonderland! How do you prefer to see an ice storm?

Ice storm

What’s your preference? To see an ice storm only in pictures from several states away? From your warm house with a cup of hot coffee in your hand? Or like me and the girls: Up close while flying down a hill on a sled? As long as the power stays on, a good ice storm can be a lot of fun!

Whether or not an ice storm is for you, the message Jesus came to share with the world definitely is. Luke 4:21-22 tells us that Jesus “began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears. 22 And all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, Is not this Joseph's son?” They weren’t sure about this Jesus guy who grew up in that area, but they liked what He had to say…until He said something they didn’t want to hear, even though it was the truth. Then everything changed.

You can read the specifics of what Jesus said in Luke 4, but verses 28-30 say, “And all they in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath, 29 And rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong. 30 But he passing through the midst of them went his way.”

How do you like to read the Bible? Is it a good book…until it steps on your toes or shows you something you don’t wanna hear? Instead of trying to kill Jesus, those Jews could have admitted their own need right then and there. But instead they tried to silence the truth they didn’t want to hear. Sometimes the Bible will show us something about our own lives we’d prefer not to hear. But those are times we can either get better or get bitter, either grow more like Jesus or try to silence the truth. I hope we’ll take those opportunities to learn the hard truth, live it out, and become more like Jesus instead of trying to get rid of Him.
