Broken Arm and Still Smiling: Enjoyment Is a Choice!

A lot of life comes down to choosing whether we’re gonna have fun or complain. We can choose to enjoy what we have or choose to get bummed out by what we don’t have.  We can choose to be happy with what is or to be dragged down by what isn’t.

Proverbs 17:22 says, “A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.” We can be merry even after Christmas. For my family this week, we can focus on the difficulty of Addison breaking her arm or be happy and thankful that she “just happened” to end up at the #1 children’s hospital in the country! God is good, and I’d rather enjoy that as much as possible instead of letting the bad drag me down. That’s often easier said than done, but it is possible each day because our good, loving God is still on the throne, still in control. Addison hasn’t always smiled this week (obviously!), and Jen and I haven’t always smiled either. But even as we look ahead to weeks of a cast and recovery, Addison can still enjoy the good that God brings her way each day. And so can all of us.

I hate to see my daughter go through the pain of this injury, but it’s easier for her and for any of us to survive a broken arm than a broken spirit. We don’t need to plaster on a fake smile (did you get that pun?😏), but we can choose to enjoy the good all around us even when there’s also difficulty.
