Hide It Under a Bushel? NO! I’m Gonna Let It Shine!

diy candle science experiment dad and daughter

And I definitely never knew a paper towel would work as a wick even with mostly water in the glass! But a little bit of oil keeps it burning well. Fun DIY candle experiment with Addison and a good reminder about letting our light shine.

Matthew 5:14-15 says “Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. 15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.” It might get tempting to hide our faith or keep it quiet, but we need to let it shine, let it shine, let it shine, LET IT SHINE. That candle kept burning  because the wick was in the oil, and we can keep shining because Jesus lives in us.

We’re in the world but the world doesn’t have to be in us. In John 17:15, Jesus said, “I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.” We’re surrounded by a culture that rejects Jesus, but that wick kept burning even though it was surrounded by water…because it stayed above the water. Through Christ we can rise above and keep shining the light of the Gospel into the spiritually dark world as long as we stay connected to Jesus, the source of our power and “the author and finisher of our faith” (Hebrews 12:2).
