What’s in Your Cup?

a man (with a sweet beard if I do say so myself!) looking into a cup

Whatcha drinking today? Is it coffee or tea to get you going for the day or maybe some water to help keep you hydrated? Maybe you’re downing soda that’s not the best for you but may have enough sugar to help you keep going through the next part of your day. What we put in our cup can help us or hurt us, but Jesus used the idea of a cup to describe what He was about to go through as He got ready to die on the cross and pay for our sins.

What’s amazing to me is the attitude Jesus had as He thought about drinking that cup of sin and torment for us. Matthew 26:39 says, “And he went a little farther, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.” Jesus knew what was coming. He knew what was in the cup (the circumstances He was about to face), and He still willingly submitted to the Father and suffered on the cross as He took on all our sin. We should never quit when our own  “cup” is difficult. It’s nowhere near as difficult as what Jesus drank for us.

Living for Jesus often brings some of the best circumstances and most joyful times we’ll ever experience, but even when it brings dark and difficult times, we should keep going instead of immediately looking for what to quit or what to change. Sometimes we just need to keep going, keep “drinking the cup” of those circumstances for our Savior. After all, look at what He did for us!
