How’d He Know?

on a treadmill, concerned about a targeted ad

I went for a run on our treadmill for the first time in months (ran a little over a mile, not the distance on the screen!). A little ways into my run, an ad popped up on YouTube about how I should stop running on a treadmill and instead do this other workout. How’d they know? Kinda creepy how that happens with ads! I ignored the ad and finished my workout, but there’s an actual enemy who knows us well enough to target us, not with ads but with specific temptations.

Matthew 4:1-4 says, “Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred. 3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” Jesus is perfect and perfectly resisted Satan’s temptation, but do you see how Satan tried to tempt Jesus right when Jesus was physically weak after not eating for 40 days? Satan then tried to tempt Jesus in 2 more areas. Jesus resisted, but it shows that Satan tries different ways to tempt us. He’ll try to tempt us right when and where we are weak. We might get hit with a sudden temptation and wonder “how’d he know,” but praise God that we can have victory over every temptation.

1 Corinthians 10:13 says, “There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

Satan has a plan to mess us up, but God has an even better plan to help us succeed…every time! Jesus knew and quoted Scripture. Find a verse or 2 about any areas you are tempted in. Those verses can be just the encouragement and help you need to win the battle even when you’re at your weakest.
