Should We Really Just Live for Today?

Fortune Cookies

2 different fortune cookies, 2 different fortunes, 2 different mindsets! Jen and I enjoyed our trip to Richmond last week and had a good meal at Pei Wei. We laughed at how different these 2 messages are, but we all really do choose between living just for the moment or living for things that will last beyond today.

2 Peter 3:10-11 says, “But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. 11 Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness.”

“What do I want to do today” needs to become “What does God want me to do today.” “What would make me happy?” should change to “What would make God happy.” And “What do I want?” should be replaced with “What will help someone else?”

It’s easy for me to focus more on my temporary WANTS than the deep NEEDS all around me. It’s also easy for me to care more about what temporary decisions the President or some other leader makes than I do about my own heart, my own relationship with Jesus.

If we’re more concerned with today than all of eternity, let’s take time to remember what’ll last and what won’t.
