A checkers triple jump is obviously the right move! Don’t worry, I didn’t actually beat my daughter at checkers that badly! Just wanted to illustrate the fact that sometimes the right choices are obvious…even if they aren’t always easy.
John 12:10-11 says, “But the chief priests consulted that they might put Lazarus also to death; 11 Because that by reason of him many of the Jews went away, and believed on Jesus.”
It was obvious that Jesus had just done something good, something amazing. These chief priests didn’t question the fact that Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, but they did question what it would do to their plans as more and more people followed Jesus instead of them. When our own plans become more important than the amazing work Jesus is doing, we obviously need to get right.
It was obviously wrong for them to consider murdering Lazarus (and if they had, Jesus could have raised him from the dead AGAIN!), but when we’re desperate to hold onto our own plans, it’s easy to push aside the obvious and try to justify the sin we’re tempted to do. When things that are obviously wrong start to sound right, we’re headed for a fall and need to turn around quickly!
When the right move, the right decision for Jesus is clear, let’s go ahead. The benefits will be obvious in the end.
